The evening began with a Mayoral reception for visiting dignitaries, Cabinet and Organizing Comitteee:

Then followed the Opening session which included a Flag Ceremony led by Convention Chairman Alice McDonald and an address by NZ's Race Relations Conciliator, Gregory Fortuin.
