Early in 2000 our Club was approached by the Supporters of the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park and asked if we could assist them in the development of a new facility for mountain bikers in Wellington's western suburbs. The work of creating the bike tracks was being carried out by the bikers themselves and the Wellington City Council had helped with aspects of environmental planning and restoration on what was quite bare hillside, other than ubiquitous gorse. What was missing were the things that make for a little comfort for those wearied by their biking efforts or caught by a patch of bad weather - shelters. And so, on 14 October 2000, we built this, to a Wellington City Council design:
This one is at the bottom of the park, by the car park; the construction of a second was completed early in 2001, at a particularly exposed spot near the top of the park.
